Desktop Icon Deletion Problems

Guest

Sometimes when I access Internet Explorer, these icons appear on my desktop.
They are called Travel, Poker, Card Games, Printer Cartridges, Casino Online,
Bingo, and Website Hosting. Usually I am able to delete them to the recycle
bin whenever they wind up on my desktop. However this time they aren't.
It's as if they've been crazy glued to my desktop. I thought maybe I
accidentally locked the icons onto the desktop, but I didn't. I can't drag
them or right click on them or delete them by using the delete button. I was
able to drag the other icons on my desktop around without a problem. I even
tried going into the desktop folder and they arent in there, and when I ran
desktop cleanup they werent on that list of things either. First thing,
where are these icons coming from, and second how can I get them off of my
desktop? Someone please help. Thank you.

butch_cg i have the same problem

Hi,

Sounds like you have spywarz. It is very common. You may have
downloaded a "free" program that contained spywarz. Common programs
include "free search bars for IE" (except google and yahoo which are
fine) and "music share programs".

There are two good spywarz cleaners that I know are good. One is
spybot
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2
and the other is adaware.
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1

I would download both and run them regularly to clean up spyware. Also
make sure you have a good antivirus program.

Cheers,

I have the same problem, I downloaded the spybot and the adaware mentioned in
the previous replies in the original post. I also use mcafees lines of home
defense regarding spyware, antivirus, firewall. I have been going insane trying
to delete the same icons that you've mentioned. Poker, travel, printer
cartridges, website hosting, bingo, cardgames, casino online. Who do we forward
this information to,in hopes that we get some real informed suggestions?
Seems like right about now, we are all grabbing for straws. If anybody
happens to find a rememdy (hope we dont have to restore) please post in this
thread and thats a great big PLEASE. Happy New Year to all

This universal uninstaller from LOP seems to clean up their own crap.
I tried every other method I could think of and this is the only thing
that worked.

I got rid of those icons and a srch.lop.com toolbar in IE as well.
First I used SpyBot Search Destroy and AdAware (in safe mode) to clean up
the machine
Not sure it did any good though since the icons started to reload on start
up. And the lop toolbar was still there...
Then I used ToolbarCop from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm to
disable a few things
from running on start up. (Object Type = Run - Startup in ToolbarCop).
What I disabled were:
Name: Filename:
bat comp C:/DOCUME~1/<current user>/APPLIC~1/TOOLWA~2/Boob Fast.exe
NAMEANTEMULTIEGGS C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/32
stop name ante/blahfirst.exe

I have no idea of what these programs are doing but disabling them stopped
the icons from popping up and it removed the lop toolbar...

Hope this helps..

Hi,
Name: Filename: bat comp C:/DOCUME~1/<current
user>/APPLIC~1/TOOLWA~2/Boob Fast.exe NAMEANTEMULTIEGGS
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/32 stop name
ante/blahfirst.exe

Just to let you know. The Stuff you listed in Application Data in your
user profile CAN be deleted. Here is what the Default Folders
Microsoft stores in Application Data.

1> Outlook Express Mailboxes - Stored in "Identities" folder inside
a GUID for the user.
2> Help Folder (usually empty)
3> Intertrust Folder
4> Microsoft Folder (inside are folder for some Microsoft settings and
files like your Address Book)
5> Microsoft Web Folders
(Don’t delete the above folders)
6> Software companies like Adobe, Macromedia, Symantec etc. also
create folders in here for user-specific files. However IF you delete
them they are always recreated the next time you open the Adobe or
Macromedia program. The worst that happens is you may have to reset a
personalized setting.

If there are other folders that you don’t recognize in Application
Data, you CAN delete them. I regularly clean out my Application Data
folder of the extra folders as they increase logon time. Many spyware
programs store their files in the Application Data.

Hi

The unwanted software is sitting in a folder called:

BallBalmBeebInside

Remove this whole folder.
(Most probably you have to start in safe mode and delete from command
promt)

Happy hunting for year 2005
