lost desktop icons

A family member somehow deleted all my desktop icons and being a basic user I
can't restore them. They are all sitting in desktop under files and programs
but the system won't let me create the shortcuts by dragging the icons to the
desktop. It tells me they have the same location. Help!!!

This behaviour occurs if the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned off.
1. Right-click the desktop.
2. Point to Arrange Icons By and then click Show Desktop Icons.

To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents
icons back to your desktop:

1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to
view.
4. Click OK two times.
