Desktop freezing

Hi,

My PC seems to have decided to go into emotional meltdown. When I logon to
XP - and it loads up my desktop and profile, I get a message saying there has
been an attempt to affect Symantec - and at this juncture, my taskbar freezes
(my mouse icon turns into the egg-timer whenever it goes over the taskbar and
start won't work) - and the desktop freezes (if I move the Symantec warning
window, it just replicates the image on the desktop). If I click OK - it says
that Symantec couldn't load - and you have to re-install. Which is nice - but
I can't do anything at this juncture other than access the task manager
through ALT+TAB+DEL.

Through some quick fire mouse clicking on my part - I've managed to run my
Norton Anti-virus manually before the error message appears - and it's
cleared out all the viruses - and seems to think my machine's fine - but I
still can't get it to load up without freezing.

Does anyone have any clue what's wrong with it?

Thanks!

Hi ALindrail,

It sounds like thre is a program which is trying to disable your Norton
services.

What you can do is to launch your computer into Safe Mode (rapidly hitting
F8 during startup) and click Start > Run the type 'navw32 /l' (without the
quotation marks). This will run the virus scan in Safe Mode.

You can also check your startup items by going into msconfig.

ALl the best!
