Desktop Disappeared

during a renewal of my antivirus program I was asked to reboot. Upon doing so
my PC came back with no desktop. Only my background (wallpaper) is on screen.
I am a novice at this but did figure out to control/alt/delete to get to the
task mgr. and to open explorer with the "add task" tab. that is why I'm able
to even ask this. Please help.

Can you restore your Machine o before the renewal option took place and see
if that will get you back to shape?
Then you can download the Renewal package and disconnect from the Internet,
uninstall the Old app and reinstall the new one.
Note you will need your Product Key to be able to activiate the Software.

The problem is most likely one of these two posibilities:

(1) Create and merge a missing userinit value.

1. Copy below between the lines:

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\userinit.exe,"
----------copy inside only----------

2. Paste into Notepad, if your Windows is not on drive C:
replace C: with your Windows drive letter and Save-As
Userinit.reg (or any name + .reg)
3. Restart.

(2) Delete a problem registry entry.

1. Open the Registry Editor,
2. Open the Run box and enter: regedit
3. Go to this key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution
Options]
4. If you see "explorer.exe" as a subkey below, delete it.
