Desktop disappeared

My desktop icons have disappeared all together when I start my xp machine up
and my desktop taskbar to
Windows Task Manager will work by pressing Ctrl,Alt and Delete. so I can
shout the machine down.this machine was working alright a few days ago

Any help is appreciated!!

Hi Peter,

You can use Task Manager to launch System Restore roll back the system
to a date before the desktop icons disappeared.

Launch Task Manager. Click File - New Task (Run...) and enter the
following command then click OK.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
