Fixed using Windows 2000 Audio Drivers and the following procedure found on Dell community
- Right click on "My computer" click Properties--> hardware-->Device manage
- Expand sound, video and game controllers by clicking "+" besides the categor
- Double click "ESS Maestro2E PCI AudioDrive
- Click driver-->update driver
- select "Instal from a list ...(advanced)" ---> " Don't search......Install
- Uncheck "show Comaptible Hardware
- Select " Ess Technolgy Inc" ---> "ESS Maestro2 PCI AudioDrive
- click YES to any driver update or unsigned drivers warning till you finis
- Restart and Volume buttons should wor

Windows 2000 drivers function just as well. I looked at the specs for you
laptop at the Dell site. You're talking about a four year old Celero
laptop system. It isn't economically feasible for PC makers to waste th
time or money to develop drivers for an older product when a new operatin
system is released. The idea is to get you to buy a new system. My fou
year old desktop system came with a sound card that wasn't supported b
Windows XP, AND didn't have a Windows 2000 driver. Laptop users don't hav
as many options as desktop users. I bought another sound card (Windows X
compatible) and plugged it into a PCI slot. If the Windows 2000 soun
drivers work for you, consider yourself lucky
