I just recieved a laptop that has Windows 2000 on it.
This was a laptop that was used in a network environment
(obviously). I want to delete Windows 2000 and install
XP on it.

I thought I could just reformat the c: drive and then
install the software, however I am not able to do this.

If anyone has any advice on how to accomplish this, I
would appreciate it.

Thanks

You will be given the option to format the drive during the XP
installation routine.

John, thanks for the info, however the XP does not
upgradefrom 2000. So I have to take it off first.

To do a clean install boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you
delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting
the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new
install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these to your new install before connecting
to any network.

You won't be upgrading. Just insert the XP installation CD in the drive
and follow the instructions. At the first screen select:

- To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER

At the next screen accept the End-User License Agreement

At the next screen you will be offered to select, create or delete
partition. You can delete the partition on which W2k resides and then
XP setup will recreate and format the partition for installation in the
following screens. If you have more than one partition on the drive,
after you have deleted the W2K partition you should exit XP setup and
start again, this will avoid installation drive letter being assigned D
or other.
