I recently installed xp on my previous ME system.
Everything was recognised apart from my printer
I have searched the web for a suitable up to date driver
and have succesfully found and downloaded one from the
Xerox website. However, to install the new driver all
traces of the printer and old driver must be deleted. I
have managed to delete all but one program which is being
run by i don't know what.

Any help on how to locate the program running the file so
that i can shut it down and delete it, allowing me to
install the new driver????????????????

Any help greatly appreciated

I am not promising that this will work, but have you tried the PrintUI /dd
switch?

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /dd /n "printer name"

For more information, run this from a command window

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /?
