Deleting Messages - Outlook Express

A friend of mine is running Outlook Express 6 on Windows 98, (prehistoric I
know !)
He is trying to delete messages. To delete a message he highlights the
message and clicks the delete button in the top banner. For some reason this
doesn’t work and he is unable to delete any message.
When he clicks "edit" and selects "empty the deleted items folder" this
doesn’t happen and he gets a message which indicates " cannot empty this
folder, an error has occurredâ€

Please advise.

Express is actually a separate program despite the similar name.
