Deleted Sent Items still show

We are running Outlook on an Exchange Server. One of our users archived his
Sent Items. He then deleted his Sent Items. The Sent Items still shows all
the archived/delete messages and attachments. We can still open these
messages. When we try to delete them again we get a message - Cannot delete
item. Already deleted, moved or access denied.

How can we REALLY delete these. Do I have to compact the Exchange Server?

If you user archived properly all of his/her sent items before the specified
date (items older than) should have been "Moved" from the server and placed
in a pst file somewhere. I think the default location is C:\documents &
Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Outlook\data\archive.pst. I usually specify
a location and name of my own choosing like C:\mydocuments\Sent2004.pst.

Archiving is the act of actually moving items from the server and placing
them in a file called a personal folder file. This is similar to zipping
items in that the pst file can hold thousands of items IE: pieces of mail
appointments ect.

Bob,

I appreciate your reply. The user manually archived the site items and
selected a specific location for the archive. They were archived to a pst
file.

The problem is the archived items were not removed from the Exchange
Server/Sent Items folder. They still show up in the folder. However, when
you attempt to delete the file(s) we get a message - 'Cannot delete item.
Already deleted, moved or access denied.' It seems an index needs to be
rebuilt, or something of that nature but I haven't been able to find where
that can be done.

Thanks
