"delete files" hangs up PC

When I go in to Tools, Internet Options and then I click
on Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files, IE stops
responding and I have to ctrl+alt+del to get out of it.
If I go to the folder, the files are actually gone, but
what I'm basically trying to do is to reset the addresses
that show in the address bar. Usually when you run
the "delete files" command, the recently visited sites
will be removed from the address bar. I can not get
these files to delete. The problem was originally
happening in IE 5, so I uninstalled it and then installed
IE 6 thinking the problem would be fixed. However, the
same thing is still happening. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lisa
