Hi guys. I have been receiving the following message the past week from
time to time when on the net. Note that I have updated my microsoft updates,
too. That
s not the problem:

Windows defender has encountered an error. 0x8050800f. An unexpected
problem occurred.

What does this mean please?

Hello Joey,

Since you haven't told us anything about your computer, operating system,
antivirus, etc. all I can suggest is that you go through the preparatory
work here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375

Any clues in the System events log you can see?

I'm guessing, but I would imagine the detections are either in an archive
file (zip type compressed file) which Defender doesn't remove, since such
files could contain other wanted/needed information, or they are in a restore
folder which also isn't touched by Defender, or they are in a quarantine
fºlder.
All occurrences are harmless in that state but could cause a problem if
uncompressed or restºred.

You should see what files are involved by examining the system event lºg:
Do a start, run, eventvwr.msc, **click OK**, then click ºn

**System**, then View, then Filter, and scroll down the " event sºurce"
control to reach Windefend, that will give you a view of just Windows
Defender-related events.

Look for events with yellow triªngles

Let us know how it works ºut.

Any way, go to eventvwr and see what is the problem.

Good luck

Joey--one thing to try at this point would be downloading the released
version of Windows Defender. It will upgrade over the version you have in
place.

Just go to www.microsoft.com and click on the Windows Defender link over on
the right.
