Windows Defender Error

My machine has slowed to an absolute crawl and I have encountered this error.

"Windows Defender encountered an error 0x80508018 An unexpected problem
ocurred. Install any updates and then try to start the program again"

I have updated the machine on a regular basis, use Defender real time
options plus have Norton's and spy-bot search and destroy running real time.
The problem seems to ocurr more when I have turbo-tax running.

Has anyone run into this problem? Customer Support thought I had malware on
my machine which to me seems unlikely.

Thanks

Hello DLBHELP,

Am I correct in thinking that you are running Microsoft Forefront Client
Security ?

My machine is a Windows XP Pro machine. I downloaded Defender awhile ago.
With that said - I think the answer is yes. I also run Norton's for virus
and Spy-bot search and destroy. Occasionally - i run Lavasoft too.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

defines this code for Forefront. I suspect that you do not have Forefront
installed--Do you have a Castle icon (Defender) or a Green Circle with a
check mark (Forefront?)

However, the code might have similar meaning.

Some links to this suggest that it is malware related, but, like you, I'm
not convinced.

I'd suggest running a full scan of the system in safe mode--do this with
both Windows Defender and Norton. If you have a root-kit detector
installed, run that as well, if none is installed, try AVG's:

If those come through clean, I'd suggest simplifying the real-time scanning.
I'd remove Spybot search and destroy from the mix. You need an antivirus,
and antispyware, but do separate occasional scans with Spybot, rather than
running it all the time.

Hi DLBHELP,

For your descripition you don't have Forefront.
FYI Microsoft Forefront: is a Comprehensive Line of Business Security
Products.
http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/clientsecurity/default.mspx
So don't worry for that. '-)

I would suggest running a HijackThis to see if your computer is infected.
Please read this guide before actually doing the procedure
And it has all of the links for downloads you need.
