Defender Suggestion

Is there anyway to add an exclusion list to defender? It keeps complaining
about valid programs on the computer. If we know what they are and Defender
claims that it is a spyware prorgam we should be able to exclude the prorgam
from Defender.

The more general fix that may work is to go to tools, options (or settings,
depending on version) scroll down to advanced options (or settings!)--and
find a large open box with an add button beside it--hit that button and
attempt to exclude the executable or path involved from scanning.

Engel's posted the correct information for this query. Reading between the
lines, however, you'll be aware that this case by case way of handling
things works fine for an individual, but isn't appropriate in a managed
network in a corporate setting--i.e. it's hard to do for multiple machines.

Windows Defender is not designed for that setting--Microsoft's solution in
that area is Microsoft Forefront Client Security:

http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/clientsecurity/default.mspx

which encompasses the same technology as Windows Defender, but is fully
manageable.

(I know--you didn't ask that question--but for some reason I felt like
spouting off.)
