Defender And Internet Explorer - HELP !!

T

In the last few weeks, I have begun having trouble with Defender blocking
access to the internet. When I would turn the computer on, the Network and
Sharing Center would show the connection to my wireless unit, but no
connection to the internet. When I would trouble-shoot, it would say
"Windows Defender Blocking" File Name "Query User". If I would turn Defender
off, I would still get no connection, but this time with a "DNS Server Not
Found" message. I could "trick" the system into working by disconnecting
from the wireless, trying to reconnect to another system, and
then-re-connecting to my wireless unit. Evidently, this would work and I
could get on..

Now, it has reached a point that nothing I do will allow me internet access.
I have scanned for viruses and spyware with Defender, Norton and McAfee -
nothing detected.. Needless to say, this is VERY FRUSTRATING !!

Any help would be appreciated !!

What version of Windows?

Does Windows Update offer you an optional update to your wireless adapter
driver by any chance?

If it does not, you might consider seeing if a newer driver for the wireless
nic is available from the vendor and installing that.

Additionally: If Web is not working, is email?--do you use pop3 email and
does that work? What about ping? When the web is not working, can you go
to a command prompt and type in "ping www.upenn.edu" and does it respond?

If you start your browser in safe mode--for firefox or IE there are usually
"safe mode" choices if you go through the start menu--that will start the
browser with no add-ons--does it work then?
