Default mail client

I want to export my messages from Outlook Express. It says I have to make
Outlook the default mail client. I've checked the box in the Outlook options
to make it the default mail client, but it still doesn't work. What else do I
have to do to be able to export messages from Outlook Express to Outlook?

I don't think you 'export' messages from Outlook Express as much as you
'import' messages into Outlook.

In Outlook, I think it is File-->Import and Export-->Import from another
program or file
Then select Outlook Express

There's no Outlook Express option when I try to Import in Outlook.

There is - it's under import internet mail, BUT.....
As stated in many many posts in this group - do NOT do the import from
within Outlook! Open Outlook express and export from there. The main reason
for this is that Outlook uses the "modified date" on emails for archiving
amongst other things, and if you import within Outlook, the modified date
is "modified" to the date of import, whereas if you export from outlook
express, the modified date is retained as the original.

That's what I was trying to do--export from Outlook Express. However, OE gave
me a message that said that Outlook is not the default mail client. I thought
I set a check box in Outlook to make it the default, but I'm still getting
the message when I try to export from OE. What else do I need to do?

Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs tab - what is set as your default
mail client there?

(By the way, unless you don't mind losing received dates, you can import
from Outlook but exporting from OE preserves this information.)

That's exactly what I needed. It was set to Outlook Express. I changed it to
Microsoft Outlook and the export worked fine. Thanks very much!

Open Internet Explorer and click Tools>Internet Options>Programs. Examine
the "E-mail" drop-down.

If you have properly configured Outlook with a mail account, then when you
start Outlook Express and click File>Export>Messages, "Microsoft Outlook"
should be available as a choice. You should select that choice to export to
Outlook. Do not import messages from Outlook Express using Outlook because
it will change the dates on your messages.

Not so. All you get is Export. And if you click on that option, it comes up
with a box saying that "this function only exports to Outlook or Exchange"
or words to that effect. Effectively there is NO choice in exporting from
OE - it's exchange or Outlook and nothing else!
