How can I make Outlook my default mail client? I installed Outlook on my new
PC running Vista and everything work well except the message everytiime I
open Outlook and it goes thru a couple of screens asking about setup and
making it my default.

Then I get a message about not having a default mail client.

Any suggestions?

Only Outlook/Office 2003 and 2007 are fully supported on Windows Vista. Earlier versions were out of support by the time Vista was released so no testing was done with those earlier versions.

OL 2000 is not really Vista-compatible, but sometimes it will work. Are you
installing it in Internet Mail Only mode or Corporate/Workgroup mode? Try
using the latter.

Thanks, it installed fine, and works fine - the only problem is the message
and having to go thru the 2 screens making it may default, but it doesn't
remember or save that info.

You'll either have to live with it or fork out some bucks for a newer
version of Office - it's a known issue and AFAIK, there is not a hack
available to avoid the error. Even if you figure out a hack to fix it, there
may be other errors that will you'll discover with extensive use, in both
outlook and other office 2000 applications. Plus Outlook 2000 is old and
insecure - you really should use a new version.

If you are only using Outlook 2000 because you need a calendar, try Vista's
calendar. It and Vista's Mail client are a good substitute for those who
don't wish to upgrade to a supported version.

You need to select it as the Default in Windows, too. Start button, Default
Programs. This used to be selected in Internet Options, Programs. However,
one of the problems with 2000 and earlier versions is that you might not be
able to select it as the default and/or it does not remember your password
and must be entered every time. You would be much better off using Windows
Mail, Windows Live Mail or even Gmail instead of this old version of OL if
you can't just upgrade to a vista version of Office.
