Hi I recently returned from a long holiday to find that the people I had
left my pc with had added several programs on to my hard drive and my
computer was running really slowly. I tried to defragment the drive in
order to clean it and speed things up.about an hour into the
deframenting process an error window popped up teling me that windows
was shutting down. Every attempt to res3et my pc since has put me into
a loop where I end up at a blank screen with an error window saying
'name not found' when I click 'ok' the computer resets and arrives back
at the error window again.
I'd rather try and see if there's a simple way out of this problem
before I fork out close to a hundred euro for a technician to look at
it. I'm running Xp professional.
Thanks for any help offered.

Try a system restore, with any luck you'll have a restore point from
before you went away. Then, you'll just have some files to delete.
DEMAND that they tell you what they put on YOUR computer.

If your using the retail version of xp pro,
you'll have to use the recovery console, or repair install.
If it's an OEM system. some have recovery tools accessible during boot
(one of the Fx keys will give you access to them)But i'm not familar with
them.
