If and when the extension of Daylight Savings Time goes in effect will
we be able to fix our computer clocks with a simple patch or will we
all have to buy new versions of Windows.

worry much about at the moment.

Timezone information is stored in the registry so a simple patch should be
all that is needed.

Isn't there a downloadable resource kit progie called timezone or tz
which allows for timezones not covered in the original XP table? I
believe it just hacks some registry entries so it shouldn't be a big
deal. All you should need is a .reg file.

Microsoft has developed over time two different tools to help with this.
One was tzedit that was included with the 98 and NT4 resource kits and
AFAIK still works with XP. The other was a command line tool called
timezone.

As you say, a simple reg file is all that would be needed. Since the
proposed change isn't supposed to go into effect, if it is passed, until
2007, there's plenty of time.

As you say, a simple reg file is all that would be needed. Since the
proposed change isn't supposed to go into effect, if it is passed, until
2007, there's plenty of time.

For most windows operating's system 95, 95b, 98se, me, and nt based
system. The old windows 95/nt kernel toy called tzedit.exe will
work. Not a toy now? I still have it.

Indiana may need the tool next year as well.
Most of Indiana will be on Eastern daylight time next year unless
counties petition to be on Central time. Vigo county (Terre haute)
is going to petition to be on Central time

Of course the Indiana legislators could repeal it next session. (2006)
They would have to get enough votes to overturn the governors veto.

Am I allowed to repost that tool? Do I need Microsoft permission to
do it? How do I get that permission?

No need as it is available a number of places on the web. A quick
search at Google or any good search engine will return multiple links.
MS will no doubt re-release that, or another tool, to update timezone
info if the legislation is passed.
