data recovery in WinXP

I run WinXP Home edition on my laptop. I just recently
lost a large amount of data. Curiously, not all of my
files were affected, but only the ones that I attempted
to back-up to a CD-RW. On my laptop, the icons for these
files still appear w/ their original names but these
files are all 0 kb in file size and when I try to open
them, there is nothing there. Unfortunately, the back-up
to my CD-RW apparently did not work because all of those
files are also 0 kb and have nothing in them. I'm pretty
sure that I backed up the data correctly (although I may
not have). Is there any way to retrieve/recover this
lost data since the icons and file names are still
present in their original folders?

Any help would be appreciated.
