Data lost. Is there hope at all

I read a lot of threads on the same topic. Did not come across any
that dealt with chkdsk and NTFS. So here I am, hoping that sombody
here might help me.

I have a 40 GB logical partition on a 160 GB disk on windows XP Pro (
SP1 ). Last 2 days I ve been seeing a message in the System tray (
right side of the task bar ) that there is an unreferenced file called
G:\????.
I did not do anything particular since I could not locate any file
called ???? in the G drive.
But then next time I reboted the system ( today ) when windows came up
it ran chkdsk and deleted almost all the files on the drive ?
That s almost all my data gone.
I tried various ways to recover teh data including system restore,
without any success.
Is there any chance for me.
I m willing to purchase software for this purpose.
Are there any good data recovery softwares out there. Do you have any
suggestions.
The data is there on the hard disk, since never wrote anything to this
disk again. Actually I havent done much with it after the apisode at
all. So I have confidence that with the help of some recovery utility,
I might see my precious data again.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I've used Get Data Back before and it worked perfect. My
whole drive was corrupt. Here is a list of software and
some resource info as well. Good luck. Though I doubt
you'll need it. Just put your machine off or at least
don't write over that drive, ie the worst you can do now
is a scandisk :)

Control Panel >> Administritive Tools >> Computer
Managment >> Disk Managment, Click the Drive, Right Click
and Format this will lose everything but should allow it
to work, Or if it is hidden you will see Add Partition.

If this does not work phone up your Local Police Station
and ask for their Computer Forensics and they should be
able to help you, Sorry I cannot be of more help but if
you do not know what your doing I would not advise but
follow them Rules and if it says Unhealthy instead of
Healthy Format the Drive.
