cursor erratic

I'm stuck on my main pc which uses windows xp
Without warning my cursor now behaves erratically and
opens windows and starts applications by itself.
I've scanned for viruses and the machine seems to be clean.
Tried to troubleshoot by changing display setting but
no good. any ideas please?
