this brings up my wndows task manager which lists 34 processes running.
most seem to use between 2 and 4 thousand K but a few are using upwards of
16,000 K. i've googled them all and still don't know which i can safely get
rid of and which i should keep.

and would deleting them from the task manager have any significant impact on
my computer ... faster for example?

It's not wise to delete anything that you do not understand. But killing
a task in Taskmanager does not delete it.

Disabling XP's processes is not going to enhance the performance
of Windows XP noticeably. Instead, I would suggest installing a
minimum of 512MB of RAM for optimum performance.

thanks guys ... i have 512 MB already and frankly, my computer seems to run
very well. there are times when it runs fast when bringing up a URL and for
some reason unknown to me, other times when it seems to run pretty darn
slow. i thought that perhaps disabling some uneeded processes might speed
things up but if not, then not.
