Create new paragraph numbering styles?

I need to number paragraphs in the format "nnnn", where n is a number and
there must be four digits, i.e., "1" is "0001", etc.

Word 2003 provides a number style "nn" where numbers less than 10 will be
displayed with a leading zero. I can work around this for paragraph numbers
less than 100 by adding two zeros before the "nn" style, e.g. "00nn", but
this breaks down at 100 because it still displays two leading zeroes "00100"
rather than four digits "0100".

Is there a way to create a new number style, e.g. "nnnn", or some other
workaround?

You could use SEQ fields to create the numbering. You can use different
sequence names for different numbering sequences. The only difficulties with
that are that the fields do not automatically update when you move the
paragraphs around, and they themselves are not automatically inserted, so
you will have to use copy/paste (but not from here) or autocorrect to insert
them. Something like
{ SEQ MyNum \# "0000" }
should work and for a macro to update them see

I appreciate the workaround. I'm still hoping for something a little easier,
if anyone else has an idea (automatically inserts and updates).

I have found that if you save the SEQ field as an AutoText entry, it does
update upon insertion, though you'll still have to update fields if you
later add items in the middle of the list.
