Paragraph numbering format - 0001?

There is a numbering format with two digits , i.e. that starts with "01". I
need paragraph numbers that always have four digits, placed within brackets
(e.g., [0001] to [9999]). I can add the brackets to the "01 style, but then
I get [01] to [99], [100] to [999], and [1000] to [9999]. I can a add dummy
00 to the brackets, but then I get [0001] to [0099], [00100] to [00999], and
[001000] to [009999].

Is there any way to get a four digit formated paragraph number (e.g., [0001]
to [9999])?

Use a SEQ field nested in a Quote field and save it as autotext

{QOUTE [{Seq myNum \# 0000}]} where both pairs of { } are entered with
CTRL+F9

Toggle the field code display (ALT+F9) to see [0001] select the text and
save it as autotest (ALT+F3)

You might name the autonext "nextnum" or something simple.

Thanks - I'm now learning how to use QUOTE, Seq, and autotext.

This solution appears to require that I insert text at the beginning of each
paragraph that is to be numbered. Is there any way to connect the numbering
to a paragraph style, or to do a search and replace based on paragraph style?

Thanks again.

JG,

Yes it has its drawbacks, but as you will see in the article here:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/WordsNumberingExplained.htm

field numbering is simple and robust
