Crashed XP

My Windows XP Home Edition recently crashed and it claims I have a file
missing that I need to start it and to insert the original XP disc. The
problem being that most new computers don't come with a disc! So, I used Safe
Mode and managed to get as far as the log in screen, however no screen names
appear and the computer freezes. What can I do?!

Well I was hoping there was another way around it. I thought perhaps I could
use somebody elses XP disc, but I can't find one anywhere! Then I thought I
could create an MS-DOS Start-up disc from another computer that uses XP, but
I'm not sure if you can do that with CD as mine doesn't have a floppy drive.

I assume what your actually asking is how can I retrieve data, that I did'nt
backup?
You have to check the type of recovery disk you have and its recovery
options
ie does it simply put your sys back to its deleivered state, thus deleting
all, or is there an option to keep data?
For that you'll have to read the manual, or see PC vendors web site.

Or maybe pull the hd and slave it to another sys to recover data. Of course
this may invalidate any warranty.

The startup diskettes only invoke the first part of the XP loading sequence
in the event that the machine upon which XP is being loaded does not have
the ability to boot from CD.. you would still require the XP CD..

I would imagine that your XP version is an OEM, and should be obtainable
from the vendor.. you have little choice as you know of nobody from whom you
could borrow an OEM XP Home CD..

Yeah I imagine you're right. I always thought it'd come down to me needing to
buy the XP CD, or at least get hold of one. I think I might continue my hunt
for somebody with the disc, then get in touch with my vendor. Thanks alot.

Hi,

So, it might really happen so the vital file is erased accidentally. If
you do not wish or can not reinstall OS, you can utilize DOS data
recovery tool for example Uneraser to bring that file back. This one
tool is on a Boot Disk, a bootable data tools set CD image. That should
really help in your situation.
