Corrupted Windows Mail

Zak

I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually
get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE
MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL.
WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS
CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails
from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and
dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I
had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the
same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for
reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
do a trial uninstall of your antivirus. If no improvement, you can
always reinstall it. Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, consider
upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Thanks Gary,

I'm running Trend-Micro which came installed with the machine (Dell Inspiron
530), about a year ago. Has been working okay up until recently.

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
First, go into its settings and disable any interaction with email, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, do a trial uninstall of the antivirus.

Another option (instead of uninstalling Trend Micro) is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of
overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

Hi there, I too am having the same problem, but only within the last month or
so. I read your previous posts about uninstalling email antivirus. I am
running McAfee, is it safe to do this !!!
Many thanks

You should probably leave the diagnosis of "same problem" to the experts.
Give us the symptoms, and we will make the determination as to what is wrong.
However, if you are convinced you have the same problem, read on:
McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.
Next, delete that email account (because it has been corrupted by McAfee),
restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

I am getting the same error message as Zac. I also have deleted emails
returning when I open Windows Mail. I had McAfee on my computer but have
removed it and still continue to have a problem.

After uninstalling McAfee, did you run the special removal utility I mentioned below?

Gary what is the free anti virus that you talked about. I also have this
problem and have mcafee. help please

Gary VanderMolen

The free antivirus I recommend is Avast! See
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

When you install it, select 'custom' install, which then allows you to
unselect installing its email scanning module.

I should also mention that Microsoft will be releasing a free antivirus
called Microsoft Security Essentials, currently in beta testing.

I'm getting this message but it doesn't restore deleted items, I am just not
getting some emails.

Please explain in more detail what you mean by "I am just not getting
some emails."

Also, which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.
