Corrupt IE before and after XP SP2

Guest

Very recently, I was unable to get onto Internet directly through IE6. I
still get e-mails. I can also get onto AOL through their broadband
connection (I use cable modem). If I get on AOL, the IE6 icon seems to work
again (until I close AOL).

Other computers work through the same modem, so I have narrowed it down to
the computer I am using. System restores were ineffective....same problem
existed. Tried running sfc /scannow, and still same problem.

Then (while connected to AOL), noted that SP2 was avail for xp (which is
what I am running), so loaded that, thinking that I would get a new version
of IE6. However, same problem.

One thing I noted both before and after SP2 was loaded is that the
"Advanced" Tab of Internet Options is completely blank....even if I say apply
defaults. There are no items showing up. This leads me to suspicion of a
corrupt file, but again, I thought SP2 download would correct.

Any ideason how to restore IE to normal functionality?

If you have installed any software that modifies standard system components,
eg to give a different boot screen, or even custom theme, uninstall it
before installing either service pack.

Also, SP2 includes all the items in SP1, and may further update some of
them. It is not necessary to install SP1 before getting SP2; nor to
iuninstall it or any other Microsoft Windows Updates.
