corrupt files

Joni

I have been getting alot of corrupt file messages (various files) The file
or directory is marked C\System\Volume. I have run Chkdsk on each one and
it ran and closed with no message. Does this mean it is fixed?
My computer mfr. is telling me I need to reinstall Windows XP to have a
clean copy. To me this is always an absolute last resort. So far I've not
had a problem that I know of due to these corrupt files. I have an inkling
that they may have been caused due to problems I am having with McAfee via
MSN. At present it is uninstalled and I am unable to reinstall it.

What would you suggest.

Joni, SystemVolume is where the System Restore files are stored. You
can try Rt clicking MyComputer>select Properties>System Restore. Check the
box Turn off System Restore on all drives. Click Apply, Ok. Restart and
reverse the procedure.

Check the Event Viewer and see. I certainly can't see it from here!

So far
I've not had a problem that I know of due to these corrupt files.

Then how do you know they are corrupt? What is the exact message you
are receiving? If it's always ...volume, just kill all system restore
points and then turn them back on as someone else indicated.
And explain your problem so it's more complete and understandable if
you have to come back.

Get rid of McAfee and use Avast ( free ) .

well, firstly we are not sure if the mfg is saying
to do a factory restore to "restore windows"
or a "new installation of windows" via a winxp
installatin cd.

however, if you have a winxp cd you might want
to run a System File Checker (SFC) "if"

your harddrive is the same version as your xp cd.

in other words a winxp sp2 cd won't work on a
winxp sp3 o.s.

another option is that if you did install sp3,

you can uninstall the sp3 update file
via add/remove programs.

this will revert your system back
to sp2 and restore all its files.

I would suggest you post more details about the error message to
eliminate guessing what it might be saying and suggest things to try
that might work maybe.

Then I suggest you post some information about your system so there is
no guessing about that:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste back here.

There would be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name) or whatever appears to be only your business that you can delete
from the paste.

Methods instead of guesses are sure to follow (hopefully).

Oh my.

Do not download anything where the description includes repairs that
include words like:

fix, fix up, fix you up, fix you right up, tune up, clean up, repair,
doctor, mechanic, one click, free scan, deep (anything deep),
analysis, other bugs, faster, freezing, automated.

It is unclear in your post, what is reporting the corrupt file.

Can you post the exact text in the error message, including any
numbers ?

Do you know the actual program reporting the corruption ?

It would be wonderful, if the "asknerd" suggestion of magical
programs that cure everything, was true in fact. The promise
of cure-all programs, is how so many people are tricked into
falling for scams. And why so many malware repair forums are
swamped with "rogue program removal" requests.

To check the health of the underlying hard drive, you can use
the free version of HDTune (2.55).

http://www.hdtune.com/hdtune_255.exe

This test isn't doing any more work, than the thorough option
of chkdsk would do. But it does it in an easy to understand
graphical display. It shows blocks on the disk that have CRC
errors. You don't really want any red blocks at all, only
green ones. This isn't a file system check, it is a check of
the ability to read data from the disk drive.

http://www.hdtune.com/hdtune_errorscan.jpg

If you had red blocks, it would be easier to understand your problem.

It isn't likely to be CRC errors, because your reports of corruption
are isolated to one set of files. But it doesn't hurt to take a look.

In any case, I'd like to see the actual error message, and info
on what tool is reporting the problem, because the corruption could be
caused by something else. And exact error messages really help.

Also, on my computer, I have a

C:\System Volume Information

Is that what the message is reporting as the location of the problem ?
