Corrupt file - recovery console

A

Andrea

I am not sure my last post was submitted or not so here
goes...

My son's computer will not load up...it flashes a blue
screen then restarts...I did manage to read the
following "the registry cannot load the hive (files)"

I have found some info on this topic and suggest starting
the recovery console...but how can I do that if I cannot
get to the start menu?

Help?

Unless you installed the Recovery Console it wouldn't be available from the
Start menu. You must boot from the XP CD.

Assuming you
have a retail version or full OEM version of XP as opposed to the
manufacturer's recovery disks that don't have this option though they might
offer their own recover
scenario.

Be sure your system is set to boot from the CD. If you are not sure, when
the system first boots you usually see message about how to enter setup or
something similar and tells you to hit a key, sometimes it's del, sometimes
it's esc, just hit the key. This takes you to the system bios, you need to
navigate to where the boot sequence is set, put the CD-ROM drive first in
line.

Place the XP CD in the drive, save your settings and exit. The system will
reboot and should boot from the CD. If you see a message to hit any key in
order to boot from the CD, do so, otherwise, assuming your system supports
it, the system should boot from the CD on its own as it can't find
an OS on the hard drive.

XP Setup will begin by examining your system, don't worry, just let it run,
it's just copying some files to a temp folder. Ultimately, you'll be
brought to a menu. Choose, "Repair a Windows XP installation using the
Recovery Console, press R.

You will be asked for an administrators password. This is not any of the
accounts you've created for XP. It's a hidden system account for which
users are asked only to create a password during setup. Most leave this
blank. If you left it blank, when asked for a password, just leave blank
and press enter.

Then, follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base Article.

Ok I have changed the boot sequence to boot from CD-Rom
and saved the settings etc...but it is not working...could
it be because the CD is Windows XP from Dell?

It's possible Dell only gave you what is a recovery CD though I would think
that simply would have taken you to a different screen.

One last shot, when you boot the system, a few screens into the boot
process, there should be a message telling you if you wish to boot from the
CD, press any key.

Actually, when you say it isn't working, I really need to know what that
means. If it means it simply tries to boot the system and bypasses the CD,
then look for the above message. If it means it's taking you to some other
screen, Dell probably gave you a recovery CD. What Dell does, varies. For
awhile they were giving recovery CDs but not too long ago, they changed back
to giving full CDs, at least on some systems so I need to know, what is
going on when you say "not working."

I finally got to the window set up screen and get the
error: ql1240.sys file is corrupted. I have done a debug
and this error continues.

I think you need to contact Dell. It's possible they didn't include it on
their disk and I think at this point, they are going to have to be the ones
to get you started again as I can't be sure of what they've supplied you.
It's also looking more and more as though you will have to invoke whatever
system recovery procedure they offer.
