Every time I use my control panel it displays a list of the items instead of
icons. I always change it back to icons but it keep reverting back to list.

I have checked the "remember each folders view settings" . I have held down
the ctrl key as I close control panel in every way: using <file> <close>,
using the "x" and using the little icon in the upper left corner.

Please help, does anyone know of a way to make it stay the way I put it?

Thank You

Hi Kevin,

WindowsXP will remember the settings of up to 400 folders, after that it
starts forgetting some. See this from MVP Kelly for a way to increase this
number:

Line 2, increase the folder view size limit to 8000

I know it is supposed to remember, but it wont remember the view settings on
this folder or any other. At one time, I had the "remember each folders
view settings" box unchecked so I could get all folders to detail in windows
explorer. Now everything is detail and I cant get it to go back to
remembering each folders view settings.

I have checked the "remember each folders view settings" box again and
I have changed the view settings for this folder and others. Everything
still keeps going back to detail.

Thanks for trying.

Kelly's file also deletes the data store. So it will start remembering afresh.

Kevin,

First off, which other folders, system folders, perhaps? Either way, start
with checking your Control Panel choices: Right click the Start
button/Properties/Customize/Advanced/Control Panel: Display as....

Also, which view are using via the Control Panel? Classic or Category?

I have made a shortcut to the control panel so I just double click the icon
and it comes up. Sometimes its icons and sometimes its detail. I am trying
to get it to stay icons, the same with many other folders I have.

I have everything set to classic view

Your fix is different, I have never tried it. Hope it works.

Thank You.

If it is any consolation, I'm in exactly the same situation. I have
"remember folder settings" and "Classic view" in effect.

My hypothesis is that the Control panel is not a real folder, so it is not
allowed to remember your "icon" settings, even if other folders do.

A bypass, albeit amazingly tedious, is to set your default the way you want
the control panel to behave, then set *everything* else to the way you want
them (details, in my case).

I tried this, but gave up after three months.
