Control Panel (Again)

B

barrowhill

When I open Control Panel, it opens up in folder (tree) view - If I go to the
standard buttons bar, "Folders" is checked. If I click on "Folders" to
uncheck it, the Control Panel goes back to just showing Control Panel icons
with the "blue frame" on left, which is the way I want it. The problem is
that when I uncheck "Folders", that view isn't remembered. The next time I
open Control Panel,
the folders are all shown in the left pane again. I have "remember each
folder's view settings" checked.

On previous advice, I ensured the default folder action (Tools\Folder
Options\File Types\[NONE] File Folder) was set to "open". I've tried setting
to "explore" and back to "open" but not matter what is chosen, the control
always opens up in folder view.

Further help appreciated.

nass,

I performed your instructions but alas to no avail. Still opening up in
folder view. This really is baffling. Their must be a setting (registry?)
effecting this.

lRay,

Thanks for responding once again. I performed your "tip" both by closing on
"x" and via file\close with control key pressed. As indicated to nass, this
really is baffling. There must be a setting (registry?) effecting this. Any
additional help always appreciated.

nass,

I've turneded off my AV and firewall to check and also ensured windows
defender real time protection off. Still same. I've nothing else that's
starts up when windows starts

Perhaps need to expand problem area as it's not just contol panel. If I
open windows explorer for example it opens in folder view. I can't get it to
do otherwise (this is one that I want to open in folder view). My Computer,
Network Places or whatever I chose to open will only ever open in folder view

ey,

Thanks again for tip but unfortunately it didn't work.

**** One VERY interesting point to note........

I have the "My Computer" and "My Network Places" icons on the Desktop. If I
open from here, they both open as required i.e. NOT in folder view.

If however I click the Start Menu button then select either of them they
both open up in folder view as does Control Panel and Windows Explorer
!!!???. That I can't understand. Does this give you any further clues ??

Its time to mess with the registry. see the link below for procedures:

Your view settings or customizations for a folder are lost or incorrect
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=813711

If things still don't work well try to repeat the previous procedures, they
may work after the registry tweak.

Hi,
Let me recap on this:
You want both the icon to open in tree view not in Folder view, am I right?.
Read the info here:

nass,

I hope I'm not confusing you......

To me Tree and Folder view are the same thing. When for example I open "My
computer" from desktop icon, It doesn't open in tree/folder view. It opens
displaying 'System Tasks', 'Other Places 'and 'Details' in blue background
left hand panel.

If however I open from clicking "Start" menu button then selecting "My
Computer", it opens in the tree/folder view not blue background panel. The
"Folder" button on menu bar is shown 'depressed'. Click ing this reverts
back to blue panel.

Windows Explorer and Contol Panel ALWAYS opens in tree/folder view and I
can't get them to do anything else

Thanks for link to further info. Noted for future reference. I'm happy
that Windows Explorer opens showing "My Documents" but don't want it to open
in tree/folder view. I'd like it to open where left hand pane has the blue
background and options to perform the "File and Folder Tasks" or goto "Other
Places" etc.

I'd already set Bag MRU Size to 8000 previously. I rechecked though and
did as you suggested but still same.
