Control Panel does NOT remember display options

Every time I open the Control Panel, I get a Detailed view. I want
Icons, so I go to View Icons and it works. But ... the next time I open
the Control Panel it is back to the Detailed view (almost always - I
think it depends on whwther I use WIndows Explorer again in themeantime
- I can't tell, but almost always).

When using Windows Explorer to view folders, I have set the View to
Details and then Tools - Folder Options View - Apply to All Folders. But
in Advanced Settings, I have also Checked- Remember each folder's view
settings.

So, I do that (above), open the control panel, and I have a detailed
view. I select Icons, and I get icons. However, the next time I open the
control panel, I get a detailed view :-(

Is there a way to lock this in? Maybe a registry setting? Why does it
keep changing? It seems like Windows is not following it's own rules
(the options I set (above).

Integrity is obvious.
The lack of it is common.

XP only remembers 400 views by default.
Download and install the fix to make xp “remember” more than 400 folders.

Then, in explorer, set your view as you like and go to: tools, folder
options, view tab, apply to all folders.
Also make sure to check: remember each folder's view settings.

Yes, I have applied that registry "tweak" (double-click on bags8000.reg
that I downloaded from Kelly's site). But it still doesn't fix the
display options for the Control Panel.

If I go to the control panel - View menu - Icons, I see icons. Then, if
I go to a folder in Windows Explorer, I see my default setting of
Details. If I go back to the control panel, it is now Details again.
Then, in explorer, set your view as you like and go to: tools, folder
options, view tab, apply to all folders.
Yes, while in a folder in Explorer, I set View to Details, and then go
to Tools - Folder Options - View - Apply to All folders
Also make sure to check: remember each folder's view settings.
Yes, that is also checked (I even uncheck, recheck and click Apply).

Then, if I go back to the control panel, I see details. I set it to
Icons (I see icons) - go to a folder in Explorer (see Details as I
previously set) - go back to the Control Panel, ...... and it's Details
again.

It keeps reverting back, even with - remember each folder's view
settings - checked.

Is the Control Panel not considered a folder? I wonder if there is a
registry setting that I can manually change.

I have seen where the control panel just won't "behave". Try tweakUI for xp
it has a similar setting that should work on the control panel as well.

I'm sure that by posting this, I am guaranteeing that the next time I
open control panel it will display Details, but it actually does seem to
be fixed. I have rebooted a couple of times (trying - IN VAIN! - to
remove a Dell keyboard arrrrgh!!!!! .... but that's another issue.) and
every time I open the Control Panel it is the Icons, as I have it set.

And I think I found the problem. After running the bags8000.reg registry
tweak (folder view size limit to 8000), I manually checked the registry
and I could not find the new/modified keys. ????? So I looked at my the
..reg file I had downloaded and it looked like this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
???
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40
???
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
???????? ???????????? ??? ??
??????????? ...................

All blanks (space characters) had been replaced by "?".

I have no idea why - but I bet that's how it looked when I first ran it
months ago, too.

So, I downloaded it again to get a valid copy, ran it, and it appears to
have fixed my Control Panel display woes.

Yeay!

Thanks for taking the time to help out.

Happy Krimble.
