Continuous Fan...

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me why when I set my computer to sleep
(through the screen saver - screen saver in 5 mins, monitor off in 20 mins
and hard drive off in 30 mins.) but the fan inside my computer is on
continuously.... its too noisy to leave on all night in my son's bedroom.
Is there anything i can do to keep the computer in sleep mode (primarily for
the antivirus and windows updates) rather than shut it down. (Gawd knows,
the kid will never manually run the updates and scans!!!!)

thanks

I.m sure others will say otherwise, but the two fan keep the CPU and power
supply cool. There is no getting round that unless you have a water cooled
computer. Your best bet is to clean the bearings of the fans and get rid of
the dust that accumulates. You might find they run smoother then. I have
used this method on a number of computers to good effect.

I am not positive about this but I believe you have to decide whether
you want a screen-saver OR if you want the machine to go to sleep mode.
I believe most screen-saver generate a video activity that prevents the
machine from going to sleep. Try screen-saver : none, and suspend to the
delay you wish. If the machine does not go by itself to suspend mode
after such a delay of inactivity, try forcing it by Start, Turn-off,
suspend and see what happens. If the machine has a problem going to
suspend mode (or does not stay in suspend mode more than a few seconds),
a program running in the back-ground of the machine is preventing it.
Try shutting down these programs one by one until you identify the culprit.

thanks john,
would the antivirus program be considered as running in the background? If
it is, then shutting it down would defeat the purpose of keeping the
computer on for scheduled scans and updates!

Save the earth and reduce global warming due to coal fired power plants
and turn the pc off when not using it.

Well, of course, the AV runs in the background but, as far as I know, AV
do not prevent the suspend mode from activiting. Otherwise, most
computers would not suspend!

First and foremost, is the fan noise any different than when you are
normally using the PC? If not, follow the first advice you got... a clean
paint brush and a vacuum cleaner will do wonders for the insides.
If yes, louder when you set it to "sleep", are you using a ScreenSaver (SS)
that did not come with Windows?
If you do not want the PC to suspend (for in suspend mode it will not do the
updates) set the screen saver to Blank Screen. Reason: if you are using a SS
that is not a Windows own SS, such as aquariums, etc, many of them set the
CPU activity to 100%, thus heating the CPU and the fan spinning hard all the
time... I had them, I killed them for that reason.

But at the end of the day, if you run the computer while connected to the
net long enough during the day (10-20 mins will suffice), and your antivirus
has an automatic update setting (most do), and Windows Autoupdates is set
on, then the updates will run shortly after you connect next time after
shutting it down.

Most new motherboards have the ability to also go to a standby mode which
would normally turn these fans off. This sometimes works and sometimes it
does not. Regardless..the same motherboard may also have settings to control
the fans according to the internal temperature of the CPU and/or the chassis
providing the fans of the type that are plugged directly to the appropriate
connectors on the motherboard - not those that are connected directly to the
power supply. On the motherboards I have experienced with, this setting did
not work that well.
Additionally, if the fans you are using are connected to the motherboards
own connectors you can make use of program called SpeedFan that can control
these fans even during normal operation of the computer. You would be amazed
that if you have the "right" (the list is available on their web site)
motherboard known by this program you can make it almost silent during
normal operation.
