PC does not go into standby

Hello

I have XP Home SP2.

I can select a screen saver which comes after 5 minutes of inactivity. But
the pc does not go into standby mode after 15 mins which I select from
Monitor Power > Turn off monitor After 10 mins and > System standby After 15
mins.

The Power Scheme I have selected is Energy Star. In the past my pc would go
into standby mode after 15 mins. and when I come back to it afterwards and
shake a mouse the monitor will turn on.

But now I only get the screen saver after 5 mins and then the monitor is on
then screen saver after 5 mins and the cycle is repeated. There is no
standby mode where the power light of my pc would flash until I shake the
mouse. Please assist. Thank you.

Hello Drew
Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I use 3D FlowerBox.
I went to kb306676 website for a fix. I downloaded the file from that
website. But upon installing i get the message "Setup has detected that the
Service Pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you
are applying to it.
You can only install this update on a computer with no Service Packs
installed." I'll be grateful for your help. Thank you.

Hash,

Are you running WindowsXP SP2? The update has a reference to WindowsXP SP1.
You probably need SP1 installed to use this fix. I'm assuming this 'fix'
should be included in the SP2 update from 'Windows Update'. Go to Windows
Update and get all your updates, then try your standby mode again.

Hello Drew

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2. I went into Get Windows Update from Help
and Support.

In Windows Update when I click Express Get high-priority updates(
Recommended ) I get the message :
Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the
problem

"

and when I click Continue I go back to Express Get high-priority updates (
Recommended ), so it goes round and round in loop circles. It does not
register or reinstall the files. In the Security Center of Control Panel I
have a dot selected on Automatic ( recommended ) Updates.

Please assist. Thank you.

Hash,

You may need to do a repair installation. Do this first.

run 'System File Checker'
* insert WinXP CD
* Start > Run > type sfc /scannow (note space bewteen sfc /), click OK
* Scan should begin verifying files are in place & not corrupted

Hello Drew

I ran System File Checker and no results came up at the
end of it. So nothing happened.

But I have Spybot Search and Destroy spyware and adaware installed in my
system. When it scanned my System there were some changes made to some of
the Registry files with my ( Resident ) consent. I think since then I am
having this Standby problem. Do you know how I can undo all those Registry
changes ?

How can I restore all my System files to its original versions without
having to reinstall the Windows XP or losing all my data and programs ?
Thank you.

Hash,

-Insert WinXP CD, reboot the computer,
-When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, select the option:
'To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R'.

This should recover your settings & Programs.

Hash - I have had and continue to have simliar problems. I had some success
by disabling all the programs that start on the Startup tab. you get to
these by Start/run/ and then type in msconfig. This is a partial
implementation of Microsoft's instructions to perform a clean boot to
diagnose driver problems. Turning off these caused my computer to start
going back into timed standby again. Then one by one, I enable them to see if
timed standby continues to work. be careful you don't turn off anti-virus
etc. I installed Internet Information Server ( XP Pro) and lost standby
again, and got it back by disabling the programs on the startup tab again. I
don't know why timed standby is so fragile/finicky.

Search for "timed Standby" my previous comments . perhaps this link will
work:
