XP Home SP2 won't go into Standby

Whether I go to Power Options via Control Panel-Settings or via Right
Click-Display Properties - whenever I select a power management scheme which
sets the PC to go into Standby - say Turn Off Monitor after 15 mins then
Standby after 25 mins, whilst the Monitor turns off - the PC does not go into
Standby!

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why, please?

This facility was working some months ago - worked for a few times and then
stopped! I'm not conciuosly aware of doing anything that may have caused
this. My PC is set to Hibernate when I press the "Sleep" button and this
works OK!

N.B. I've posted the same question on the PC Advisor Helproom pages here in
the UK - this seems to be a common problem and so far, this morning, I have
not found anyone who knows how to remedy it!
