connection to windows xp home

My laptop had some problems, a kind person sorted them out, but now when I
switch on, I get message, 6 days left to connect to windows. When I try to
put in my product key it says maybe mistyped. I am abroad at the moment, my
disc is at home in England. any suggestions. I only go home March. Will my
laptop close down, if I dont have my disc?

Your 'kind person' did a repair install of Windows with their own Windows CD, which has a different product key than your copy of Windows. Windows XP has to be activated within 30 days of installation or it will cease to work.

You can't activate the 'kind person's' Windows on your computer, because they already activated it on their computer. In order to activate Windows you need the product key from your copy of Windows. You'll find it on the orange label on the CD sleeve or on the tag attached to your computer.

Call Microsoft at the number you see on the screen and explain what happened. You'll be able to activate if you can tell them your product key. Without a product key you'll have to buy another copy of Windows.

Maybe you did type your key incorrectly. Use one or both of the below
apps to check the proper key. You can download them to your harddrive,
floppy disk or thumbdrive to run them.

Thanks, I'll try that. Will I not need to load my own disc. I have asked
someone back home to post it to me, but I don't know if I'll get it in time,
before the activation periods up.
