Hi my Acer laptop is stuttering during the start up tune and whenever I try
to play music and films. Someone suggested disinstalling and reinstalling
windows. I have windows XP home edition sp3.

However, my computer came with windows already installed so I have the
product key underneath the computer (product key is genuine, 25 digits), but
not the disc.

Does anyone know if it is possible to reinstall windows by downloading it
and using the key I have on my computer? or if not does anyone have any
other suggestions to stop my computer from stuttering?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Your first concern should be to contact Acer and *get* the reinstall disks.
There may be a small cost - pay it.

Alternately, your system should have come with a way to make reinstall or
restore CDs or DVDs.

If you don't do either of these things, when your drive eventually fails, as
it will, you will be on the hook for both a new drive *and* a new XP
license. This will be in the $200-$300 range.

Nope, it's not. You can only download pirated copies this way, and they
aren't likely to match the key type.

Yes, look at what is starting automatically and minimize this. Use
msconfig to do this.

As to during music and films, again, look at what else is running, and
minimize this. Your system may also just be underpowered for this sorft of
thing, and in that case, the fix is to upgrade to a much faster system with
more memory and better video hardware.
Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Get the reinstall disks as soon as you can.

Most computers now come with recovery data located on a separate
partition and come with a method of making recovery DVDs from this
partition. You should consider making recovery disks *before*
something really bad goes wrong.
Check out this page from the Acer website:

It is a real bummer that they don't include setup disks anymore.

I would recommend that if your computer doesn't come with setup disks, you
create them one of the first times you boot into Windows after you buy the
machine to ensure that you always have a sure way to recover it.

Hi all,
thank you for your advice.
Problem resolvedin the next way:

1. Right click My Computer select properties
2. Select the Hardware tab and click device manager
3. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers group
4. Double click Primary IDE Channel
5. Select the Advanced Settings tab
6. What is the current Transfer mode for Device 0?

If the mode is set to PIO Only select the driver tab and click Uninstall
This will uninstall the driver and reboot the system. Upon reboot the driver
will be replaced and you should be using the correct setting.

I hope it will be helpful for the persons who had similar problems.

Thank you very much for your interest in helping me with my problem.
