how do I change my connection speed setting in Win. XP? I
am not getting the 56K modem speed I need for basic
internet speed.

Here are two different places to check for problems:

One
1. Start -> Settings -> Network Connections ->
<name_of_dialup_connection>
2. click on the General tab
3. click on Configure...
4. confirm that the Maximum speed (bps) is set to at least 115200

Two
1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer
Management
2. click on Device Manager
3. expand Modems and double click on the modem entry
4. click on the modem tab
5. confirm that the Maximum Port Speed is at least 115200

If either of these do not work you may have too much line noise to connect
at this speed and you may end up with 33600 or less.
