Connect to network printer - what is the path?

Neil

Hello All,

We have an HP Laserjet 2200 wich is connected directly to our network using
the network card for the printer. I have set the printers IP address and the
host name is HPLJ2200. Using Windows XP, i go to add a printer. This then
starts the Add Printer Wizard. I click on a Network printer or a printer
attached to another computer and then click next. Here is where i have a
problem. If i click browse for a printer, the printer isn't shown in the
shared printers list (which may be ok as it is not a shared printer on a
users machine??). I can not figure out the Connect to a printer path as this
is not attached to another machine. I have tried entering \\HPLJ2200, the IP
address of the printer (eg 192.168.0.10 & \\192.168.0.10), also tried the IP
address with the host name (eg \\192.168.0.10\HPLJ2200). None of these work.
It is strange however that when i enter http:\\192.168.0.10 in the URL box
(Connact to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network), this
works and i can install the drivers etc no problem. Only problem with this
is that printing is a bit slow (showing the dialog box and then printing a
document). Is this the way it should be set up?

Note that 192.168.0.10 is not the IP address of the printer - this is one i
made up for this example.

Guidence is needed :)

Thanks,

Neil.

I think you actually answered your own question. You can't find the printer
share because you haven't shared it. Do the add printer thing on a PC, but
instead of choosing a network printer, choose local and create a new
standard IP port using your IP address you've asigned to the printer. You
can do this on all the PCs, or do this on a server, share the printer, and
create a new network printer on each PC using the new share.

That's where you went wrong. Rather than selecting "Network" printer,
select "Local Printer," de-selecting the auto-detect option. Click
<Next> and select "Create a new port." From the drop-list, select
"Standard TCP/IP port." Click <Next> twice, and enter the IP address of
the printer. From there, follow through installing the appropriate
print drivers.

Correct. The printer is not connected to a print server, so it cannot
be shared.
