I just installed XP and would like to get the
toolbar/taskbar/statusbar or whatever it is called that
runs along the top of the desktop but do not know where
to find it. This is the bar that has shortcuts to
commonly used tasks like word, windows explorer, excel
and that. How do I find it?

The task bar along the top is usually part of MS Office.
Called the office shortcut bar. If you have installed
office you may have already installed it. More modern
office suites, ie 2k3 do not automatically load it like
the olders office suites eg 97.

But the good news is XP supports quick start which is
exactly the same. Right click on the task bar ( the bar
at the bottom with the work START on it) click toolbars
and put a tick beside quick start. Now you can drag icons
to this portion of your task bar (usually immediately to
the right of the word START)and it becomes the equivalent
to the the office shorcut bar.

The Taskbar is usually at the *bottom* of the screen (though you can
drag it to any edge). It may have been shrunk so as to vanish. Put the
cursor right to the edge, and if the pointer turns to a double headed
arrow, left mouse button down and drag inwards a little until it
appears.. Then on that you want the Quick Launch bar - right click in
unoccupied Taskbar, Properties, and check 'Show Quick Launch' and click
Apply
