Computer will not boot to welcome screen

My window xp home boots up to the mup but stalls just before the welcome
screen.
Investigation led to the message "Invalid media reading c:" Unfortunately I
can no longer access my CD drive so cannot use my System recovery disk for
Windows XP
What should I do? Or should I just get a new hard drive?

aren't you putting the cart before the horse??
So you buy a new HD....but your CD drive dont work so you cant install XP.
You should first endeavor to get your CD working or replaced.
If the problem lies in not booting with the XP Cd in place maybe you are
missing the message "push any key to boot from CD".........??????
In the BIOS does it list your CD?? is it set as 1st boot device with the HD
as 2nd????
What exactly happens when you try to boot from the XP CD.???
get back to us with more details
