I had a problem with my Compaq.. First of all it locked up, in mid program. I
turned it off, and when it came back on it started with asking what mode I
wanted to restart...ie: Normal, safe, last know good configuration etc. I
selected last known good configuration. and it came back with a listing of
files. and locked up again. I figured that I had gotten some type of virus,
and since the drive was small. I decided to replace it with a new drive. I
purchased the XP Recovery disks from Compaq, tried to load them, it goes
through the partitioning and formatting process, then the screen goes
black.... I can restart it in the DOS mode, and it runs DOS programs with no
problem, but I can't get windows XP to load... it does copy a few files to
the drive... I can see them in the DOS mode,,,,Can anyone Help....Could it be
some type of Hardware problem??

Since it is not working, my money is on the wrong disks. Have you added any
hardware other than the hard drive to the original configuration? If so
remove the added hardware and try the disks. You can add the removed items
after system is restored.
Post back with results.

I haven't added any new hardware. It is exactly as it was when it left the factory.

Then it is probably the wrong disks. This is a Compaq problem, we cannot
troublshoot OEM restore problems. I can give a guess. It could defective
media, defective CD drive, wrong restore disks, failed hardware, but none of
the problems lies with Microsoft XP. The media should restore the system.
You have not modified the system, so the restore disks should put the system
back to the original shipped state. The Windows XP OS has nothing to do with
any problems running the restore media as Windows of any flavor has not
loaded when you boot the restore CD media.

Well, I reformated my hard drive and loaded XP Professional... It went through the copying files portion with no problem.... It said to restart the computer so that windows installation could continue... When it came back up it said "Windows Setup" at the top left of screen and "Setup is starting Windows" on the bottom bar.... Then it locks up there.....
