Windows ME system recovery disks ~will not recovery Windows

I have a pavilion 7920 with a XP upgrade. Thru my attempt at cleaning out
unneeded/unused files, I must have deleted stuff I actually needed.
Rebooted, and It was ok for a short while, then the screen went to black.
Ran disks 1 and 2 of system recovery(that came with the computer), and the HP
screen came backup, started to boot up the Windows ME, then it went to a
"sorry, something happened, try last know good config"with three options:
Last good config, safe mode and safe mode with network.
None worked, wouldn't go in safe mode, just kept circling from the HP screen
to the windows screen to the "open in last good config/safe mode screen"
which doesn't work. Shuting completely down does nothing.
I have the 3 system recovery disks, my newer XP disks, and that is about it.
The 3rd Application recovery disk (3 of 3) does nothing and trying to run the
XP disk does nothing

If you tried to run the Windows ME recovery on top of Windows XP, you've
probably corrupted the whole thing to a point where the best option is to
start over.

Hopefully, you have all of your important files saved somewhere, because if
you start over, you're going to end up losing everything. At this point, you
may have lost it all anyway, but there's no way to know for sure.

If you do have files you need to save, I'd suggest that you stop now and get
some hands-on help from someone who's really, really good with computers.
The best way to go about it may be to take your hard drive out and put it
into another computer, and copy the files to cds or whatever. Then you'll
need to wipe the drive and reinstall the operating system. You may need help
with that as well, considering what you've done so far.

Since you have HP recovery CDs, you can't simply run the upgrade for XP on a
clean drive, unless you have some other qualifying media (which would be the
fastest and easiest way to do this). If you do have alternate qualifying
media, you should be able to boot from the XP cd, delete existing
partitions, and start clean. If you're doing that and having problems, you
need to be more specific than "doesn't work" like listing any error
messages, etc.

If the HP restore CDs aren't doing what they're supposed to do and your plan
was to go back to Windows ME, you may need to contact HP for specific help,
as their CDs are nothing like normal Windows installation CDs, and normal
installation instructions aren't going to help you.

Thanks so much~I am ok with doing the reformatt option if that is the
solution. You think that will work? I did that once before, for another
reason before my XP~seems like there was some driver maybe to an ethernet
card I had to reinstall right after. Does that sound right? Is there a link
to those drivers that I can locate from my other/work computer to save myself
confusion?
thanks again, this is very helpful

All the drivers you need should be on the HP disk if you want to reinstall
ME, or you should look for them on HPs site if you want to install XP.

Good Luck
