Computer Slowdown when use CD/DVD drive

My computer almost goes to an halt when I insert a CD or DVD in the drive
bay. The rest of the time works fine. DVD's movies migth take up to 5 minutes
to load in the Media Player, then sound ok but can't see any image. Using
other decoder, the image can be seen but movie freeze constanly.
I tried to fixed it by re-installing the Media Player 11, downloading the
latest firmware of the CD/DVD drive and by cleaning the registry. My drive is
a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B.
What can I do? How can I fix the problem?

Start > Run: Eventvwr
See if there are events like controller errors, blad blocks or similar.

"Cleaning" the registry was not a good idea.

Rather than wasting my precious time, I'd replaced that drive instead.
