Maybe your sound card is faulty, another possibility is that a voice
modem taking control of your sound device? If you don't use voice on
your modem you could try the following:

- Right click on my computer, choose Properties then locate Hardware
pane
- Choose Device Manager
- In the right hand pane click the + sign in front of sound, video and
game
controllers.
- Locate "wave device for voice modem", if present, double click,
locate device usage and choose disable device.

Thanks John. I tried this option - there are no voice devices on my computer.
The sound card I am using is a Realtek AC97 - the error I recieve when
trying to listen to system sounds is - the sound device is already in
use.......
The "Default device is Modem#2 Line Playback" I can't seem to change it in
my sound and audio properties. I have no idea what the Modem#2 is I cannot
find it on my list of hardware devices!!

Can you see an AC97 device in your device manager >sound, video and
game controllers? If so you could try uninstalling it (right click >
uinstall)
Then reboot and it might reinstall correctly - you may have to point it
to a driver.

I assume that your system is free of viruses etc?? Otherwise I would
suspect a hardware fault.
