Computer restarts itself

I have Windows XP home edition with all available uppdates and service packs.
When switching to another user profile the computer restarts itself when I
click on the desktop icon. I receive an error message that the computer has
restored a serious problem. The info displays errors with a .dmp and .xml
file. Have tried to restore the system to a previous date (one week back). I
get a message that this cannot be done since no changes have been made. I
have spent the day trying to fix this and have no idea what I really need to
do. Kan anyone help?
