Computer locks up every day

I leave my computer on at night and when I wake up in the morning now my
computer is locked up. It won't do anything and I have to restart the
computer to use it. This has happened since I reinstalled AVG anti-virus
software. Except that there was one day it did not happen. Don't know if
AVG is the cause, though. But this problem started the night after I
reinstalled AVG. This has been going on for the last week. Like I said,
one day it did not happen. I am using XP Home. Any ideas?

An easy way to find out if AVG is the culprit (and recent versions of AVG
have been problematic for many people) is to uninstall it. Install Avast
instead (another antivirus that has a free version). If your problems go
away, you've got your answer.

Do you have AVG configured to perform a system scan during the late night or
early morning hours? Maybe the scan encounters a file it can't handle or a
location on your HD which is corrupted. Why don't you perform a system scan
while you're watching it and see what happens or check the AVG logs.
Personally I've been using AVG for a few years w/o issue.

Do you have a particular reason for leaving your computer on overnight?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

will check it out ...

Even if I don't leave the computer on, I'd like to know what the problem is.

Thanks.

Yes, that's it, I think. The AVG scan is scheduled for 6 am. There is a
corrupted area on my external hard drive. I have ordered a new hard drive.
In the meantime, I will disconnect the hard drive before going to bed. That
should work, shouldn't it?

That should do it. Good luck with the new HD.

Robert, I have a few Ideas that may be of help. You may have a virus,
spyware and or malware. AVG is OK for a free program but far from the best.
i would reccommend you unistall it and go to www.avast.com and download the
free trial then do a thourogh scan on your computer. If you have a virus it
will find it and you can remove it to quarantine which AVG does not do. Then
download Spyware Terminator from www.spywareterminator.com
Run a full scan with this and it will catch spyware and malware. Hopefully
this will help. Let me know.
