computer freezes when update windows

I have a Gateway laptop. It sometimes freezes when the
computer goes to standby mode. After reinstalling
windows I found out that the problem related to Windows
Update. When I uninstall all the updates, the computer
never freezes when it goes to standby. The more I
install, the more frequent the problem is, though I could
not find any specific update the causes the problem.
Installing more than one update at a time make the
problem worse. Any ideas what might be going on?

I have had the same problem.
Cured by unchecking tick box in "device
manager" "CDROM" "Properties" "Properties" "Enable
digital CD audio for this CDROM device"
