Computer Freezes Up

I am running windows xp media edition and everytime I put
a cd in the dvdrw/cdrw combo my computer freezes up and I
have to restart the computer. I have disabled autorun in
the group policies. What else can I do? Thanks in
advance.

Does the disk spin-up ?, Check Event Log for System & see
if any Disk errors are reported for the drive. Also, when a IDE
ATAPI device has repeated errors it will step back from a
normal UDMA mode 2 to a slower PIO mode.
If you are familiar with Device Manager, you can "sometimes"
Uninstall/Delete the CD/DVD instance and also the Secondary
controller that probably handles the device. Then reboot the
PC and Windows should re-enumerate the controller first &
then the CD/DVD combo.
Also common are firmware updates for these types of units.
Check the Manufacturer's website to see if a new Firmware
flash is available for your specific model.
